Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this experience.
Stop at: Galle Fort, Galle, Sri Lanka
Located in southern Sri Lanka, Galle Fort preserves layers of colonial history at a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Galle has long been a centre of foreign trade. The Dutch fort encloses the older town on a headland with the sea on three sides; its ramparts extend for more than 2.5 km and make for a pleasant, interesting walk. Historian James Emerson Tennent proposed that Galle may have been the biblical Tarshish, said to have traded with King Solomon, the Persians and the Egyptians. In 1505, a Portuguese fleet led by Lourenço de Almeida, bound for the Maldives, reportedly drifted into Galle. One story says the Portuguese named the town after hearing a rooster crow, since galo means rooster in Portuguese. Another explanation traces the name to the Sinhala word gala, meaning rock, referring to rocks in the harbour.
