Is a Sri Lankan Cooking Class Worth It? A Traveller's Guide

Is a Sri Lankan cooking class worth your time and money? Here is an honest look at the benefits, cost, duration and who will enjoy it most.

A cooking class takes a few hours of your holiday, so it is fair to ask whether it is worth it. Here is an honest answer.

Eating a meal versus cooking it

A restaurant lets you taste a dish. A cooking class lets you understand it: how the coconut is prepared, why curry leaves go into the oil first, how a plate of different dishes is balanced. You leave with skills, not just a full stomach.

What happens in our class

You are welcomed with a drink, cook a traditional Sri Lankan meal from scratch alongside a local host, and then sit down to eat what you made. Dessert, curd with kithul treacle, is included.

Who will enjoy it most

  • Food lovers and curious travellers
  • Beginners who have never cooked a curry
  • Couples, families and friends looking for a shared activity
  • Solo travellers, since our minimum is just one guest
  • Home cooks who want new techniques

If you would rather relax over a meal without lifting a finger, a restaurant may suit that day better. Be honest with yourself about the mood you are in.

Is the price fair?

The class costs $15 per person, and includes the following:

  • A private session
  • Hands-on cooking with a local host
  • A welcome drink
  • Your full meal
  • Curd and kithul treacle dessert
  • Complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off within 15 km of Hikkaduwa

There are no hidden fees. For a private experience with food and transport included, that is very good value.

How much time do you need?

Allow about 3-5 hours. Because the class is private, we can usually discuss a start time that suits your day.

Before you book

Tell us about allergies, dietary needs and how spicy you like your food. We will plan around them.

The verdict

If you enjoy food and want a genuine, relaxed glimpse into Sri Lankan home cooking, a cooking class is one of the most memorable things you can do in Hikkaduwa.
